Mets acquire Jeff Francoeur from Braves for Ryan Church

Ryan Church can discard that "I Love New York" T-shirt he often wore around the Mets clubhouse. The Mets, believe it or not, again have put Church on a flight to Colorado - this time having bid farewell.

The Mets, who never seemed to embrace Church - who suffered two concussions during his stay - dealt him to the Atlanta Braves Friday for fellow right fielder Jeff Francoeur. Mets GM Omar Minaya said assistant GM John Ricco suggested investigating the availability of the 25-year-old Francoeur during an afternoon brainstorming session on Thursday. The deal was completed within 24 hours.

Minaya acknowledged a component of the trade was "to change it up a little bit" given the Mets' fourth-place standing in the NL East.

The GM also suggested the righthanded-hitting Francoeur, with his ability to pull the ball with power, is suited to Citi Field. Both are solid defensive right fielders, although Francoeur won a Gold Glove in 2007 and has a stellar arm, having recorded the most outfield assists (65) in the majors since his promotion on July 7, 2005.

Both players are under their new teams' control through the 2011 season, with two years of arbitration eligibility remaining. The Mets will receive $270,218 from the Braves, half the difference between Francoeur's and Church's salaries.

The last Mets-Braves swap came on Nov. 25, 1996 - when Greg McMichael was obtained by the Amazin's for Paul Byrd and player-to-be-named Andy Zwirchitz.

Church, who came to Flushing with Brian Schneider from the Nationals in a trade for Lastings Milledge on Nov. 30, 2007, was arguably the Mets' MVP during the first two months of last season. He then suffered his second concussion of the year on May 20 in Atlanta, when he took a knee to the head from Braves shortstop Yunel Escobar while trying to break up a game-ending double play.

A woozy Church was irresponsibly allowed to fly with the Mets to Colorado and pinch-hit, even though he indicated he felt like he was bobbing in a boat on the Bering Sea. Suffering from post-concussion syndrome, Church nonetheless was shut down for only three weeks in June. When symptoms resurfaced, Church again was shut down - this time for seven weeks - after a July 5 start in Philadelphia. He hit .219 with two homers and 13RBI from Aug. 22 to the close of the season while still feeling concussion effects.

Francoeur, an Atlanta product once seen as the future face of the franchise because of his roots and David Wright-like demeanor, had his issues with the Braves. He was demoted to Double-A Mississippi last season on July 3 with a .234 average, eight homers and 62 strikeouts in 334 at-bats.

Francoeur was hitting .250 with five homers and 35 RBI this season and his .282 on-base percentage ranks fourth-lowest among NL starters. Church was hitting .280 with two homers and 22 RBI.

Both players are expected to start in right field today, with Church hopping a flight to Colorado to meet the Braves. The teams open the second half against each other Thursday at Turner Field. "It's definitely disappointing," Francoeur told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I never wanted it to happen this way. You can imagine getting traded, but you never imagine getting traded to your biggest rival. ... It's going to be a little different atmosphere - 45,000 every night, and it's the Big Apple. It's going to be different.

"Me and my wife (Catie) are really excited to go up there and try it out. It's such a shock, and happened so quickly, you don't get a chance to digest it and think about it."

Boozer Deal 'Not Happening' For Bulls

The rumored trade involving Carlos Boozer going to the Bulls in a three-team deal with the Jazz and Trail Blazers is dead, according to sources.

ESPN's Chris Broussard quoted Portland general manager Kevin Pritchard as saying the deal is "not going to happen."

Chicago's Kirk Hinrich was reportedly headed to Portland in the deal, while Utah would have landed Tyrus Thomas.

The trade appeared to officially die late on Friday when the Trail Blazers signed Jazz forward Paul Millsap to an offer sheet.

Miller For Duhon Discussed

A source close to the situation said that Chris Duhon's agent, Kevin Bradbury, "is exploring the possibility" of the Sixers signing and trading Andre Miller to the Knicks in return for Duhon.

The Sixers reportedly want more than just Duhon.

The mid-level exception is all the Knicks could offer Miller in a straight signing. But in a sign-and-trade, the team could pay Miller a bit over $7.6 million in the first contract season because of the 125% plus $100,000 rule governing trades. Duhon makes a little more than $6 million next season, his final contract year.

Grizzlies waive newly acquired Jerry Stackhouse

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP)—The Memphis Grizzlies have waived Jerry Stackhouse (notes), just a day after acquiring the NBA veteran in a four-team, eight-player trade.

General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Wallace announced the move Friday after Thursday’s blockbuster deal involving the Grizzlies, Dallas Mavericks, Toronto Raptors and Orlando Magic.

As part of the trade, Grizzlies guard Greg Buckner (notes) was sent to Dallas, and the Grizzlies also received a second-round pick and cash from Toronto and cash from Dallas.

The 34-year-old Stackhouse was due more than $7 million with the Mavericks next season, but his contract could be bought out for $2 million—likely the amount of cash Memphis received in the trade.

Pirates are 'pushing hard' to trade Sanchez

The Pittsburgh Pirates are "pushing hard" to trade All-Star second baseman Freddy Sanchez (notes), a National League executive told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Friday morning.

The San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies are two of the teams with which the Pirates have spoken, the source said, but there are as many as four or five more, according to the Post-Gazette.

Sanchez, 31, again is the Pirates' leading hitter with a .313 average and last week was selected for his third All-Star Game in four years. That selection meant that he now needs to accumulate 600 plate appearances to trigger an $8 million option for 2010. He has 329 appearances.

Teams are not enthusiastic about Sanchez's salary, the source said, but they would be less likely to offer much if Sanchez were on the verge of free agency. Sanchez would be a free agent if the option is not exercised, either through his vesting option or by a club option, according to the report.

Jazz, Okur agree to 2-year, $20.8 million extension

The Utah Jazz and Mehmet Okur (notes) agreed Thursday to a two-year contract extension worth a reported $20.8 million that will keep the three-point shooting center off the free-agent market next summer, the Salt Lake City Tribune reported.

Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor confirmed the agreement but declined to comment until officially submitting the extension to the league Friday.

Okur long has voiced a desire to stay in Utah, including his hopes of having his number retired at the end of his career. He averaged 17.0 points and 7.7 rebounds while shooting 44.6 percent from three-point range last season.

Okur still will make $9 million this season, but the extension will add two additional years at a combined $20.8 million, according to an ESPN.com report. The extension takes him through the 2011-12 season, just ahead of his 33rd birthday that May.

The agreement came less than two weeks after Okur decided on June 30 to decline free agency and return for the final year of his contract. Fleisher and the Jazz had unsuccessful extension talks prior to that.

Stoudemire wants to stay with Suns, big contract

On Wednesday, Amare Stoudemire clarified or reasserted points that he is healthy, wants to stay in Phoenix, does not want to play for Golden State and wants a maximum-level contract extension, according to a report in the Arizona Republic.

Stoudemire is eligible for an extension before the season starts and can opt out of his current contract's final season (2010-11) next summer if his deal is not extended, the Republic reported.

"Right now, it all depends on what team I want to go to," Stoudemire said of his willingness to sign an extension, specifying that he would "probably not" sign one with a mediocre team.

"I'll sign an extension with a team that has a future. The ball is in midcourt right now. It's on both sides. We have to come to an (agreement) here and figure out what's best for both of us. If I had to re-sign with a mediocre team, it would be here. Because I'm here. I've been here my whole career. And I would love to bring the Suns back to where we once were. That's my ultimate goal, a la Paul Pierce (notes). He did it with Boston. He stuck around. Boston took care of him. They made the right decision to bring in Garnett and a few other players and they won a championship. Hopefully, we can do the same here."

Stoudemire and his agent, Charles Grantham, are scheduled to meet with Suns General Manager Steve Kerr. The topic of an extension surely will arise, along with the Suns' reluctance to give Stoudemire a maximum deal that would average more than $20 million annually.

Three-team deal would send Boozer to Bulls, Hinrich to Utah

Another multi-team deal, possibly involving the Chicago Bulls, Utah Jazz and Portland Trail Blazers could be on the horizon, according to ESPN.com.

The rumored deal would be headlined by Utah's Carlos Boozer (notes) and Chicago's Kirk Hinrich (notes), NBA sources told ESPN.com. However, the report indicated that no deal is imminent.

The report, citing two NBA sources with knowledge of three-team deal, said Boozer would land in Chicago, Hinrich in Portland and Tyrus Thomas (notes) in Utah.

According to report, Boozer would be the elite low-post scorer that the Bulls have been chasing for years while positioning them to have significant salary-cap space for the summer of 2010 to court Chicago native Dwyane Wade (notes) or Chris Bosh (notes) in free agency, since Boozer is entering the final year of his contract.

Hinrich, meanwhile, is a lead guard that Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard has been known to covet for some time as a potential backcourt mate for Brandon Roy (notes).

Gustavsson, a 24-year-old native of Danderyd, Sweden, played this past season for Farjestads in the Swedish Elite League. In 42 regular season games, Gustavsson registered four shutouts and led the league with a 1.96 goals against average and a .932 save percentage. The 6-3, 192-pound netminder also led Farjestads to a 2008-09 Swedish Elite League Championship after allowing just 14 goals in 13 playoff games and posting a 1.03 goals against average, a .961 save percentage and five shutouts.

Internationally, Gustavsson won a bronze medal with Sweden at the 2009 World Championships in Switzerland. In five games he posted a 3-2-0 record with a 2.83 goals against average and a .914 save percentage.

Avs Sign Dupuis, Skinner

Dupuis, 24, was recalled from the Lake Erie Monsters on two separate occasions during the 2008-09 season. The 6-foot, 196-pound center skated in eight games for the Avalanche, making his NHL debut on Dec. 12 vs. Chicago. A native of Laval, Quebec, Dupuis led Lake Erie in points (46) and assists (29) while appearing in 67 games.

Skinner, 26, also made his NHL debut during the 2008-09 campaign, appearing in 11 games for the New York Islanders. The Brandon, Manitoba native spent the majority of the season in the American Hockey League, totaling 35 points (4g/31a) in 61 combined games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Chicago Wolves.

The 6-foot-1, 183-pound blueliner played three seasons at the University of Denver, where he was a member of the school’s back-to-back national championship teams in 2004 and 2005. “Stephane is a prototypical two-way player,” Lawton said. “He plays a gritty game and is responsible in the defensive zone while also adding scoring depth for us. This is a great signing for us as we continue to build our organizational depth.”

Veilleux, 6-foot, 190 pounds, has played in 361 career NHL games, all with the Minnesota Wild. He has amassed 43 career goals and 90 points. Veilleux was the eighth player in Wild history to play 300 games. He has also appeared in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

A native of St. Georges de Beauce, Quebec, Veilleux played in 81 games with Minnesota last season, recording 13 goals and 23 points. He established career highs in games played, goals, points, shots on goal with 146 and average time on ice with 15:47. Veilleux scored 10 of his 13 goals last season with his team trailing by one or with the score tied. He also ranked second on the Wild in hits with 98.

Veilleux was drafted by Minnesota in the third round, 93rd overall, of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Flyers Sign Pronger To Extension

SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio Spurs landed free agent Antonio McDyess on Wednesday in another big offseason pickup for the aging NBA power that apparently isn't ready to fade away just yet.

McDyess, who despite being 34 was among the most sought players on the market this summer, reached a deal with the Spurs and is expected to sign later this week, team spokesman Cliff Puchalski said.

The deal is for three years, $15 million, sources told ESPN's Chad Ford and Ric Bucher.

McDyess spent the last five seasons with Detroit, which also officially lost Rasheed Wallace on Wednesday when the veteran signed with Boston.

The Spurs reportedly sought Wallace, too, but got what they were looking for in McDyess: a big and proven frontcourt presence alongside Tim Duncan. The Spurs have won four NBA championships in the Duncan era, but their star centerpiece will be 33 come next year's playoffs.

With their window for a fifth title shrinking, the Spurs began a busy offseason in June by trading for Milwaukee swingman Richard Jefferson in a four-player deal that pushed San Antonio into the luxury tax.

Between Jefferson and McDyess, the Spurs have added two former Olympians to their lineup after being ousted in the first round of the playoffs last season for the first time since 2000. Following that series, the Spurs candidly admitted to not packing the same firepower as Dallas.

McDyess averaged 9.6 points and 9.8 rebounds in his 14th NBA season. His rebounding average last season was the third highest of his career.

Pacers Land Ex-Nugget Jones

Jones is known around the league as a defensive stopper and will give depth to the Pacers' backcourt. Jones averaged 5.4 points and 2.1 rebounds for the Nuggets last season.

"[Pacers president] Larry Bird and [general manager] David Morway contacted me the first night of free agency and expressed a lot of interest in Dahntay," Jones' agent, Mark Bartelstein, said, according to The Indianapolis Star. "The Pacers are getting somebody that competes with an edge and is a lockdown defender. He's going to bring a defensive mind-set to the team."

No Imminent Returns For Beltran Or Reyes

General Manager Omar Minaya announced Tuesday that center fielder Carlos Beltran and shortstop Jose Reyes would need more time, possibly several weeks, to rehabilitate their injuries.

Minaya, who gave updates on the Mets’ laundry list of injuries, said he did not know when either Beltran or Reyes would return. That provides little comfort for the Mets, who are in danger of falling out of contention before any of their injured stars return.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP)—The Toronto Blue Jays have released one-time closer B.J. Ryan (notes) and activated current closer Scott Downs (notes) from the 15-day disabled list.

Toronto announced the moves before Wednesday night’s game against Tampa Bay.

Ryan has struggled this season, going 1-1 with a 6.53 ERA in 25 relief appearances. The left-hander allowed 22 hits, including five homers, and 17 walks over 20 2-3 innings.

“It was one of those things with Downs coming back and us needing to make a move, he was the 12th guy on the staff right now, it’s probably best for both parties,” Toronto assistant general manager Alex Anthopoulos said. “A few days ago I think you saw in the media that he expressed some frustration of not being able to pitch more and be used more. We couldn’t get him the work that he wanted.”

Ryan had mainly been used recently in blowout games. The 33-year old is in the fourth year of a $47 million, five-year contract.

Varejao And Cavs Agree On 6-Year Contract

The contract is for six years and $42.5 million, with incentives that could push Varejao's total compensation to $50 million. The final season is only partially guaranteed.

Marion Going To Dallas In Three-Way

The Mavericks, Raptors and Grizzlies have agreed to a deal in principle that will send Shawn Marion to Dallas, according to NBA sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that the trade will also send Jerry Stackhouse to the Grizzlies, with one source close to the process saying that a trade call with the league office to formalize the deal has been planned for Thursday.

The known parameters of the deal call for Marion to receive a five-year contract in the region of $40 million from the Mavericks and land Stackhouse in Memphis, where he will be bought out by the Grizzlies. Dallas will send Memphis $2 million by Aug. 10th to pay for the buyout.

Toronto will receive unspecified draft considerations and/or cash, but the involvement of a fourth team virtually assures that other players from the Mavericks and Grizzlies will be involved.

Bulls bring back Jannero Pargo

On the Wednesday Ben Gordon signed his five-year contract that could be worth up to $60 million with the Pistons, the Bulls signed Jannero Pargo to a one-year deal worth roughly $2 million to try to soften Gordon's loss.

Pargo, a local product from Robeson High, played 102 games over three seasons with the Bulls from 2003-06. Last season's unsavory experience with Moscow Dynamo brought him back to the NBA, where he's a career 37 percent three-point shooter.

"It's a great fit," said Mark Bartelstein, Pargo's Chicago-based agent. "A lot of teams wanted him, but he loved it here. He's an explosive scorer who can take up some slack for Gordon."

Indeed, Pargo has averaged 6.9 points in just 16.2 minutes for four teams during his six-year NBA career. His signing brings the Bulls perilously close to the league's luxury-tax figure, released late Tuesday at $69.92 million.

Freakish broken big toe puts Ryan Dempster on disabled list

Ryan Dempster joined the Cubs in 2004 and signed a four-year extension last winter, but his initiation with the star-crossed franchise wasn't complete until he went on the disabled list Tuesday after breaking his toe in a fall from the dugout rail while trying to join a postgame victory celebration.

''I guess it's what I get for making fun of the guys who go on the DL for burning their faces in the suntan booth,'' he said.

Dempster broke the big toe on his right foot Sunday when he tripped trying to make his way over the dugout rail at Wrigley Field after the Cubs' victory against the Milwaukee Brewers. He didn't know the extent of the injury until learning the results of an X-ray Tuesday morning and had planned to make a painful start Tuesday night until then.
The Dempster DL move came one day after three players returned from the DL and the Cubs fielded their Opening Day starting eight for only the second time.

Blazers preparing offer for Utah's Paul Millsap

After a series of trades fell through this week, the Trail Blazers have settled on their next target: Utah power forward Paul Millsap.

Although Millsap is a restricted free agent, meaning the Jazz can match any offer, the Blazers are preparing what one source called a "toxic" offer designed to exterminate interest from other teams.

Millsap, 24, is a bruising and active player who excels at rebounding. Despite being only 6-foot-8, Millsap last season used his 250-pound frame to average 13.5 points and 8.6 rebounds in 30.1 minutes per game. His 3.3 offensive rebounds per game ranked fourth in the NBA and his 251 offensive rebounds ranked sixth.

If Millsap signs an offer sheet accepting the Blazers' deal, Utah will have seven days to match the offer. The Jazz is already facing the luxury tax next season with a team salary of more than $73 million. Their finances, and prospects of competing with a lucrative offer to Millsap, took a hit last week when Carlos Boozer ($12.6 million), Mehmet Okur ($9 million) and Kyle Korver ($5.1 million) all exercised options to stay in Utah.

Devils Re-Sign Greene

The Devils today signed defenseman Andy Greene to a two-year contract at $725G and $750G, keeping him away from free agency.

The 26-year-old slick skater did not receive a qualifying offer of $660G from Lou Lamoriello this week, and essentially could have gone from being a restricted free agent to unrestricted, but Greene said the deal was near enough to being complete to make the qualifier moot.

"I wasn't going to worry about the qualifier. I knew it was going to get done," said Greene, who made $600G last season. "I wanted to be back. It's a great place to be. You want to win, and you always have a chance to win."

Greene suffered a broken hand Nov. 1 just when he was finally finding his way under Brent Sutter. He played 49 games, going 2-7-0 and plus-3, but did not appear in the Devils' playoff games this spring.

Isles sign goalie Roloson

The Islanders have signed goaltender Dwayne Roloson to a two-year deal worth $5 million.

The 39 year-old Roloson played in 63 games for the Edmonton Oilers last year posting a 28-24-9 record and a 2.77 goals against average.

The question whether franchise goaltender Rick DiPietro will be ready to play by the season's opener still remains. DiPietro, 27, played in five games last season after suffering post-arthroscopic surgical swelling in his right knee.

DiPietro, who has 12 seasons left on his record 15-year deal, also had operations on both his hips and left knee last year. The addition of Roloson will give the Islanders a solid backstop in net in case DiPietro is unable to start. The team also selected two goalies in the draft, but neither are expected to be NHL ready for a couple of years.

Devils Sign Former Pick Pikkrainen

The Devils opened Day 2 of free agency today by bringing back their seventh-round, 218th overall 2002 draft pick, right wing Ilkka Pikkarainen, who spent the last three seasons in Europe after three years with Albany.

The 28-year-old native of Sonkajarvi, Finland went 24-13-37 in 54 games with 149 penalty minutes with Helsinki last season. At 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, he "brings size, strength, scoring and toughness to our roster," general manager Lou Lamoriello said in a statement. He went 29-33-62 in 196 games with 305 penalty minutes during his Albany tenure, when the River Rats were the Devils' top affiliate.

According to the report, a deal with the Cardinals would start with Brett Wallace (notes), and might also include shortstop Pete Kozma, catcher Bryan Anderson, outfielder Daryl Jones and/or right-hander Clay Mortensen. We're just throwing the Birds' top prospects out on the table, but that's what it's going to take. According to Erik Manning of FutureRedbirds.net, via the Post-Dispatch's Bernie Miklasz, the Jays "showed a lot of pre-draft interest" in both Wallace and Kozma.

Canadiens lose Saku Koivu to Ducks

Peña isn't scheduled to become a free agent until after the 2012 season and was far from the most obvious trade candidate on the roster.

Here's another:

One executive with knowledge of Arizona's plans said the team has spent much more of its time attempting to trade left-handed starter Doug Davis, right-handed starter Jon Garland and infielder Felipe Lopez.

So, don't be surprised if those players are dealt away before the July 31 non-waiver deadline.

At the same time, the source indicated that it's now "less likely" that the Diamondbacks will trade reliever Chad Qualls, who has drawn interest from the Yankees.

Moving Qualls, who isn't scheduled to enter free agency until after next season, would further deplete the team's 2010 bullpen. At the very least, the price tag for Qualls will probably be higher now.

Davis (3-8, 3.15 ERA entering Tuesday) and Garland (4-8, 4.80) have each pitched in the postseason. Both have expiring contracts, although Garland holds a $10-million mutual option for next year. With that combination of factors, it was a near-certainty that the last-place Diamondbacks were going to make them available.

Phillies are considered leaders to acquire Halladay

The New York Post, after speaking to several different baseball executives early Wednesday morning, has made the Phiadelphia Phillies the team most like to acquire Roy Halladay (notes) from the Toronto Blue Jays.

According to the Post, more than one of the executives used this term: "No team in baseball is more motivated to get a starter than the Phillies."

Other reasons why Halladay and Phillies would be a good match, according to the Post:

• They are a now team and Halladay gives them a major boost in trying to repeat.

• He is a groundball pitcher, which only makes him more attractive to a club that plays home games in cozy Citizens Bank Park.

• He is dominant in the AL East, so the Phillies have to think his stuff would play up to a greater degree in the NL.

• Philadelphia has volume in good to very good prospects, but might not have the one sure thing to front a deal for a player as special as Halladay unless the Blue Jays see Kyle Drabek, Jason Knapp, Dominic Brown or Michael Taylor in that way.

The reigning NBA scoring champion, who can opt out of his Heat contract after the 2009-10 season, said Monday that simply getting to the playoffs “is not enough” to satisfy him anymore, and that his long-term commitment to Miami hinges entirely on the franchise getting back into the mix for the title trophy he hoisted just three years ago.

“I’m going to listen. I owe the Miami Heat that much. I’m going to listen to what they have to say and I’m going to think about it,” Wade told The Associated Press. “But right now, the way I feel, I want to make sure that we’re on track to where I want us to be on track to before I sign back.”

Wade made clear that he would like to stay with the Heat, reiterating something he’s said countless times in recent months. There’s no acrimony between the 2006 NBA finals MVP and Heat president Pat Riley either, and Wade said that the jump Miami made this past season—from 15 wins and the league’s worst record in 2007-08, to 43 wins and the No. 5 seed in the East in 2008-09— was thrilling.

“I’m good with that,” Wade said, “for one year.”

Another season around .500, though, won’t be as enticing.

“That’s not enough for me,” said Wade, who set career-bests last season in scoring average (30.2 per game), 3-point goals (88, three more than his total from his first five NBA seasons combined), steals (2.2 per game), blocks (1.3 per game) and games played (79).

Cap set at $57.7M; Seven to pay luxury tax

The NBA salary cap for the 2009-’10 season dropped to $57.7 million, and the luxury tax threshold to $69.2 million, the league told its teams Tuesday night.

The mid-level exception is set at $5.854 million.

In the private memo to teams, the NBA reported what the seven franchises paying luxury tax had to give up to the rest of the league. The list included: The New York Knicks ($23.7 million), Dallas Mavericks ($23.6 million), Cleveland Cavaliers ($13.7 million), Boston Celtics ($8.29 million), Los Angeles Lakers ($7.1 million), Portland Trail Blazers ($5.8 million) and Phoenix Suns ($4.9 million).

The 2008-’09 salary cap figure was $58.68 million, and the luxury tax level was $71.15 million. The salary cap and tax figures are reached through a formula based on league earnings.

Teams must pay an additional dollar for every dollar they are over the tax. The new figures go into effect Wednesday at 12:01 a.m. ET, when the moratorium on free-agent signings end.

Andersen reaches 5-year deal to stay with Nuggets

DENVER (AP)—Chris “Birdman” Andersen has reached a five-year deal to keep his high-flying, shot-blocking act with the Denver Nuggets, a team he revived his career with last season.

Andersen’s attorney, Mark Bryant, confirmed the agreement on Wednesday, saying it could be signed later in the day. The deal was first reported by the Denver Post.

Andersen, who turned 31 on Tuesday, could make up to $26 million over the lifetime of a back-loaded contract that gives the Nuggets financial flexibility.

He’ll make close to $3.65 million in 2009-10, up from the $998,398 he made last season, when he averaged 6.4 points and 2.5 blocks in 20.6 minutes.

“You write the best-case scenario, think you’re dreaming and open your eyes and it’s real,” Bryant said. “He’s very excited. They treated him as a priority.”

With his colorful tattoos and spiky hair, Andersen was an instant hit with Denver fans, who’ve embraced his return to the court.

Andersen came back to the NBA in 2008 following a ban that lasted almost two years after he tested positive for an undisclosed “drug of abuse.”

The energetic forward known for his defensive disruption around the basket provided a spark off the bench as the Nuggets made a run to the Western Conference finals, where they fell to the Los Angeles Lakers in six games.

He swatted 175 shots in the regular season, second only to Orlando Magic All-Star Dwight Howard (notes)—in far less minutes.

This probably says more about me than it does the subject of the quote, but the half-phrase "hired well-regarded assistant coach ..." always sets my heart a flutter. Unless the sentence ends with "Patrick Ewing."

Nothing against the NBA coaching retreads on their second and third gig, most of those jobs are well-earned, but I always love seeing a lead assistant make the jump, especially if he isn't an interim choice.

The fresh ideas are fun to take in, observe, call out or clap to. And there's always the ability to more properly gauge the assistant's influence on the team's he's leaving behind in retrospect.

We're getting it all with John Kuester, who is set to take over the Pistons. He's been bombing around the assistant ranks for two decades now, originally getting his start under Larry Brown's wing, and the impending Pistons hiring will mean a reunion of sorts for Kuester and his new city, as he was on the sidelines for Detroit's last championship, in 2004.

Kuester's most recent, and most famous role was of Mike Brown's offensive coordinator with the Cavaliers last season, a season that saw the team jump from 19th (and a very ugly 19th, at that) in offensive efficiency to fourth last season with Kuester joining Cleveland's ranks.

Orioles exploring trade options for Pie, Salazar

Seattle - Needing a roster spot with shortstop Cesar Izturis expected to be activated from the disabled list Friday, the Orioles are exploring trades for infielder Oscar Salazar and outfielder Felix Pie, who have garnered interest from other teams.

Salazar and Pie are out options and would be likely lost through waivers, so it makes sense for the Orioles to get something in return rather than lose them for nothing.

"I think the market would indicate that they have greater value than just a waiver claim," Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said. "I think it's one of those things that there's good news and bad news. The bad news is you have to make a roster decision and you have a limited amount of flexibility. The good news is that your extra players are getting to the point where they're attractive to a lot of teams.

"That is a sign of progress, that as opposed to guys that are just kind of, in baseball parlance, 'Four-A' guys, these are guys that other clubs have some interest in. So we'll see what evolves."

Pie, the 24-year-old outfielder who has started just three of the Orioles' past 21 games, is eight for his past 20 with four RBIs while getting limited at-bats with the emergence of rookie Nolan Reimold in left field. According to sources, the Orioles discussed Pie with the Chicago White Sox in a potential deal revolving around third baseman Josh Fields, but it's not known how much interest, if any, the White Sox still have in the outfielder.

ATLANTA (AP)—The Atlanta Hawks have reached an agreement to re-sign Mike Bibby (notes) to a three-year deal.

Bibby’s agent, David Falk, said Tuesday he has reached an “oral understanding” that will allow the Hawks to retain the point guard who has led the team to two straight playoff appearances.

“We’ve reached an agreement in principle that hopefully will be announced very soon,” Falk said.

Bibby was an unrestricted free agent. Wednesday is the first day NBA free agents are allowed to sign contracts.

Hawks general manager Rick Sund said Tuesday he could not comment on the status of the talks with Bibby.

Falk said the agreement is a good fit for both parties. Falk said the 31-year-old Bibby has enjoyed his time with Atlanta coach Mike Woodson, who has leaned on the 11-year veteran to lead a young team.

“It has been a very good environment for Mike,” Falk said. “He enjoys playing for Coach Woodson, who has allowed him to be a coach on the floor.”

Bibby made $14.9 million this season.

The new deal was first reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Falk would not confirm the paper’s report the new three-year deal is worth $18 million.

Falk said Bibby and other free agents have found “the market is extremely conservative this year for free agents, compared to last year.”

Falk said “a number of teams had interest in him … but I think Mike was comfortable in the environment” with the Hawks.

“He wanted to stay with a team making a commitment to win,” Falk said. “He has stabilized the team, given it direction.”

The Hawks are re-signing Bibby after drafting another point guard, Jeff Teague (notes) of Wake Forest, in the first round last month and trading for guard Jamal Crawford (notes).

Jays' Halladay all but gone in Toronto

Let the Roy Halladay sweepstakes begin.

"We have to see what's out there," Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi says. "I'm not saying we're going to shop him. But if something makes sense, we at least have to listen. We're (leaning) more toward listening than we've ever been."

Ricciardi first made similar comments to CBS Sportsline, prompting immediate skepticism from one rival executive, who speculated that Halladay was either hurt or that the Jays were being forced to dump the pitcher's salary.

Actually, the Jays' motives are far less sinister.

They're falling out of contention. They probably cannot afford to keep Halladay when they owe outfielders Vernon Wells and Alex Rios approximately $160 million combined from 2010 to '14. And they know that Halladay would prefer to pitch for a winner anyway when he becomes a free agent after next season.

Oh, and one other thing: The trade market is barren of quality starting pitchers, much less one who is a true difference-maker, one of the top five starters in the game.

The Jays' goal is obvious: To make the same type of deal that the Indians did when they traded right-hander Bartolo Colon in 2002, acquiring outfielder Grady Sizemore, left-hander Cliff Lee and second baseman Brandon Phillips.

The Philadelphia Phillies will scout veteran right-hander Pedro Martinez (notes) according to philly.com.

According to the report, it is not clear exactly where or when they will take a look at Martinez, but it could be very soon, perhaps today. The pitching-starved Phils, who were not previously interested in the veteran, have changed their mind and decided to consider him, though that does not mean they will ultimately sign him.

Martinez, 37, is 214-99 with a 2.91 earned run average in 17 seasons, and last pitched for the Mets. Last year, he was 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA for New York.

While past his prime, Martinez is, of course, one of the top pitchers of his era. The Phillies have explored trades for starting pitchers for most of the season and intensified their efforts after Brett Myers (notes) was likely lost for the season with a hip injury. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has not yet found a trade partner, and will now consider Martinez, according to the report.

Braves not looking to move shortstop Escobar

Look I understand the entertainment value of the rumor market that will swirl over the next few weeks leading up to the trade deadline. But at the same time, I think it's time to take Yunel Escobar's name out of the mix.

Teams have certainly called to express interest in Escobar and with his stubborn personality the talented shortstop has given the Braves at least reason to ponder the possibility of moving him.

Maybe we all should have seen it coming. The "Baby Backs" that Valley baseball fans so adored just a couple of seasons ago have reached their awkward years. And a season that began with so much youthful promise has broken out everywhere in blemishes.

The team's ace, Brandon Webb, has a balky shoulder. Conor Jackson, among the club's better hitters, came down with valley fever. There's an ineffective bullpen, a change in managers, a lousy record at home and, predictably, disgruntled fans who are booing the home team.And it's not even the All-Star break.

So where do the Diamondbacks go from here, besides deeper into the abyss?

The non-waiver trading deadline is July 31, and reality has set in. There is no need to make postseason plans. Any moves Diamondbacks General Manager Josh Byrnes makes before the deadline will be made with an eye toward the future - and that could mean living with more growing pains.

"We have a core of players, a lot of our very best players, and they're going to be here for a long time," Byrnes said. "We still believe in them, and a lot of them are performing at a high level right now. So we're not going to reinvent our core.

Celtics Use 'Big Three' To Court Rasheed
